Book Bad Memory (Jessica Shaw Book 2) Review :

“A woman’s life - and possible death - depended on her, and Jessica knew time was fast running out to find out the truth” page 185, “Bad Memory”That tiny snippet is just one little example of the sometimes awkward writing that pops up along the way in Lisa Gray’s second installment featuring private investigator, Jessica Shaw. This can easily be read as a stand alone mystery but the character development will improve greatly if you’ve read the 1st book. In this story, Jessica is hired to find out the truth about a 30 year old double murder committed by a teenager against her two friends in a jealous fit. She has no memory of events and has not contested the death sentence. It’s 10 days until her sentence is due to be carried out when Jessica is hired...Lisa Gray writes in a sharp, short attention span style. The chapters are minimal and alternate between Jessica and the other main characters. Each chapter heading is clearly marked. Additionally, there are two time lines: the present and 1987; when the murders occurred. As Jessica investigates, the story slips back to 1987 to fill in details. This is all done seamlessly and reads smoothly. The plotting and pacing are good and only troubled by those clunky syntax issues that pop up every so often. I think it’s the editing...For all it’s good points, “Bad Memory” does push the boundaries with the bad language. There are quite a few f-bombs, too many for my liking; it’s gratuitous. There are other words in the thesaurus and other ways to express expletives. The sexual content is milder than the 1st book but make no mistake, this book is for adults. The violence is what you’d expect in a murder mystery for grown ups and it’s not gratuitous. All things considered, Lisa Gray could be a 5 star writer with a few tweaks and a bit of editorial refinement. A worthy read📚
Lisa Gray's second series installment extended her storytelling strength from the first book. She continued naming chapters after the dominant characters, which really helped, but the many flashbacks got confusing, forcing me to go back to previous chapters for clarifying fact checks. The complex plotline makes the storyline interesting with so many unexpected twists, making each revelation surprising and stimulating. PI, Jessica Shaw's character is developed substantially from book 1, suggesting that the series be read in order.Couldn't stop reading until it all came together in the last few chapters. Loved the tension developed among characters as four murders were investigated because a sister wanted the truth. Especially liked how the author juggled well so many conflicting stories and evidence that added suspense to the fast-paced reading experience.Perfect for an escape read, where the novel focuses on the plotline rather than distracting details. I plan to read the next installment. The Audible narration was a perfect addition to my reading experience.
